Our Natural Shrouds for Ashes
Introducing our cotton burial shroud.
Cotton burial shrouds are the final addition to AWAKE’s new Planting Kits for cremated remains. The kits main draw is a soil solution called Let Your Love Grow that turns ashes to earth. The soil is the only product worldwide that is patented to neutralize cremation ashes for an eco-friendly resting place.
When deciding on packaging, AWAKE Co-founders Amanda Kelly and Lauren Andrew knew they would need a creative solution. “Simplicity, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity are our biggest commitments as a small business,” said Kelly, “and our shrouds checks all three boxes”.
Made with 100 percent natural fibers, the shrouds are hand sewn in Ontario and can biodegrade in as little as one week. They resemble a simple satchel, which holds the soil solution and lets families easily add ashes from an urn. The result? A beautifully natural solution for planting or scattering ashes.
Why cotton burial shrouds?
Cotton is one of our world’s most sustainable textiles. It is biodegradable and (even better) compostable, in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
Cotton shrouds have been used for full-body burials for over a millenium in cultures and faiths around the globe. In today’s modern world, a full body burial isn’t always possible though. More Canadians choose cremation every year (for all kinds of reasons). Still, continuing our cultural traditions and beliefs is important—and has been shown to support spiritual, social, and psychological healing for people of all backgrounds.
AWAKE is committed to creating inclusive, accessible, and realistic options for after life. Our new natural burial shrouds are designed to reflect and respect Canadians of Jewish, Muslim, and/or Catholic faiths. They are an environmentally sustainable and culturally sensitive option for Canadians of diverse backgrounds and beliefs—and are perfect for anyone planning a green burial for cremation.
